Drowning is the leading cause of death of children under the age of 5 in the Sunbelt States. Consider the statistics: 46% of all children who drown in the back yard swimming pools were considered excellent swimmers; 72% were last seen in the family home; 79% were being cared for by their primary caregiver; and 64% were seen by parents or siblings within 5 minutes of being found in the swimming pool. Drowning is called the "silent killer". There is rarely a splash or a cry for help. That is what makes this accident so frightening.

Now consider this: Drowning is the only childhood death which is 100% preventable. You can inoculate a child against disease, but you cannot totally prevent illness. You can put a child in a car seat, but you cannot totally prevent vehicle accidents. You can prevent a child from drowning in a backyard swimming pool with a few simple precautions and some invaluable knowledge.

A removable pool safety fence or baby gate is the product favored by the National Safety Council and every drowning prevention committee to prevent swimming pool accidents. A safety fence is removable by adults only and provides a total and effective barrier between a small child and the swimming pool. Some states, like Florida, California and Arizona, have already passed comprehensive water safety legislation, requiring the use of a pool safety fence around a residential swimming pool. Pool safety fences cannot be climbed, and a young child cannot get over, under, through or open a pool fence which has been properly installed. A safety pool fence should be installed wherever a small child spends time; whether it be their own home, a grandparents home, or a day care providers home.

What should you look for in a pool safety fence? The fence should be at least 4 feet in height with spaces of no more than 36 inches between poles. Poles should be fully reinforced for extra strength. The border should be made of marine-grade vinyl and sewn with double-lock stitching to prevent unraveling. Latches should be made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion and rusting. All mesh should be 100% rip-proof and mildew proof. Additionally, some of today's pool fences are available in a variety of decorative colors, allowing families to match the fence with their pool area décor. Pool fences allow homeowners the flexibility of removing the fence in a matter of minutes for special occasions. Other precautions parents should take around the family pool area is as follows: At least one adult family member should know CPR; always keep a telephone by the pool; have a clear view of the pool from the inside of your home; make sure babysitters know how to swim-make them show you; teach small children to swim as early as possible.

Additionally, if a small child is missing, look in the pool area first, as time is critical.

With a few simple precautions, the entire family can enjoy their backyard swimming pools and all children can be safe from water accidents.
